What Corporates Want?

INLEAD campus has been abuzz with excitement and nervous energy with a fresh batch of future industry leaders joining the ranks. Their first expert session was undertaken by Mr. Jayant K. Sood, Head – Corporate & Company Secretary, Indorama Synthetics (India) Limited addressing the perennial question – What the employers are looking for in a candidate when appearing for interview. All students at INLEAD from diverse backgrounds and locations are bound by the common aspiration of professional success and they will be facing their first internship interviews in a few months’ time. The session titled “Corporate expectations and Industry Orientation” addressed the same issue and witnessed an enthusiastic participation by the students.

Mr. Sood began the session by asking the students’ one simple question, “What do you want to be in life?” The hands raised were many, while some said a successful ‘Businessman’, others said ‘CEO’ and some said a ‘Global HR’. This is when Mr. Sood pointed out the need to have a clear goal in life in order to become a successful professional.  Along with having a clear goal, there is also a need to have a passion and zeal to work towards that particular goal.

‘Self-Belief’ was the keyword most used during the session. Mr. Sood enlightened the students that a strong belief in oneself is the mantra to survive this concrete ‘corporate jungle’.  According to him, one should never under estimate oneself and always work towards acquiring the numero uno spot. He also encouraged the students to expand their horizons and look beyond the obvious as there is a huge world out there beyond our senses.

Addressing the basic question that was circling every student’s mind, Mr. Sood shared some useful insights from his own experience. According to him, the secret to excel in an interview is to be well-informed about the company and the job-profile you’re applying for. Further, a well-groomed personality with excellent communication skills will help an individual excel over his contemporaries.

All in all, the session was very successful and informative and gave the students a brief preview of what the corporate world holds for them in the future.

“It was a very informative and deliberative session. I have a much clearer vision about my goal now,” said Ankit Kumar Shaw, International Business Management, Batch : April’15 MBA  (1st Year).

INLYMPICS 2015: Annual Sports Fete kick-off new energy amongst students!

“If I can turn back time,
I would love to be a student again,
I miss my friends a lot. I miss the fun.  I miss the life of being a student again…”

Reading these few lines must have given goose bumps to many of us. It’s only when we grow up we realize the real fun of being a student, of being a little immature, of being a little silly…

Well, who says Entering a College means an end to the fun part of life? Wrong, wrong…..

INLEAD very well understands that studying and fun go hand in hand because ‘All work and no Play would certainly make Jack a Dull boy’.

AT INLEAD, we organize sports fete each year, named INLYMPICS that not just celebrates fun, but also focus on incorporating the skills of team-building, strategic thinking and unleash sportsmanship amongst students.

INLYMPCS 2015, held on March 13, 2015, brought in some electrifying energy and action across the campus. The activity initiated with the distribution of students into various teams with bands of different colors - Red, Yellow, Blue, Green, Golden and Orange. The entire activity was categorized into rounds of three games like Blind Race, Arm Wrestling, Bull's eye, Hoopla, Dog and the bone, and Tug of war to name a few.

Students dressed in their best of track-suits and sneakers made the campus look all more lovely and vibrating. The adrenalin rush was quite visible while they shouted, screamed for their respective teams. A competitive activity though, students exhibited excellent teamwork and sportsmanship in INLYMPICS2015.

Not to miss are our activity organizers Anshika Srivastava, Mohd. Tanveer Alam, Rukmini Nair, Munmum Patowary, Gaurav Singhal, Mukul Bhardwaj and Abdul Majid who worked tirelessly along with the faculty to make the event a success. Another highlight of the event was a promotional counter set-up by the executives from Shopclick.com, an upcoming shopping portal to promote their business. The students got an opportunity to register themselves and leverage the benefits of online shopping through earned promotional vouchers.

And the winners, the Team Orange (Jyothi M, Vimal Raj John, Mudit Rana, Sriram Gaikwad, Navneet Kumar Yadav, Nikhil Mahajan, Dhananjay Kumar, Rajpal) and the Organizers were bestowed with prizes and certificates by Mr. Deepak Sharma, Dean, INLEAD. The event was drawn to culmination with distribution refreshments and drinks by team RedBull.

And soon fun-filled INLYMPICS 2015 ended, creating plethora of memories for the years to come and wishing for a little more energy, a little more enthusiasm, a little more fun, a little more childishness in the coming years…

Top 8 Reasons Why You Could be Rejected in a Job Interview

We list few reasons why you could be rejected in a job interview.
  1. Your last tweet was in 2012: It’s better to use one network well and be engaged on it by sharing others content and posting your content, rather than have several accounts on several networks and not be active on any.
  2. Only number on your resume is your phone number: from your work to you as a person is measurable nowadays, your resume should include quantifiable metric to show your performance.
  3. Applying for Several Positions in one team: Being eager to join a company is a good sign but applying for all the openings in a particular organization is not a positive sign. Play it cool, but not too cool.
  4. Tailored Cover Letters & Resumes: Often cover letters and resumes get addressed to the wrong people, several times people applying for jobs forget to edit the subject line, this is something which clearly isn’t acceptable by the hiring managers.
  5. Unrealistic Salary Expectations: Avoid quoting unrealistic salary expectations. Do a research and find out the salary range that people of similar jobs like you get paid.
  6. Your resume is not keyword rich: A company usually receives high volumes of resume; hence every resume is scanned thoroughly. Read through the JD (Job Description) carefully & craft resume accordingly ensuring getting pass through in the scanning of the interview.
  7. You didn't follow up: After you have sent in your resume, you need to follow up with the HR Manager. According to a survey conducted 86% of executives said job seekers should contact a hiring manager within two weeks of sending a resume and cover letter. Often a brief phone call or e-mail reasserting your interest in the position and strong qualifications is important.
  8. Don’t believe in the concept of arriving ‘fashionably late’ for an interview: A study was conducted and it says a candidate has to be only 15 minutes late to be disqualified for the position for which he has appeared for in an interview. Avoid being late, respect time and reach well in advance.
     All the best!

Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi - The New Management Guru

The Modi wave had cast a spell on India, sweeping the nation in awe of the management techniques undertaken by Modi that led to his success. Let us go through few of the management lessons one should learn from NaMo.

BJP, Marketing Skills
Narendra Modi, with his impeccable win in these elections has demonstrated skills that should be embodied in every working professional. His strategic moves have given the other parties a run for their money. Modi had hypnotized the nation with his flawless marketing strategy and created history by coming to power with a landslide victory. He struck the right cord with the right people at the right time, a time when the nation was ailing from the huge financial crisis. His election agendacan prove to be a very good case study for management professionals. It displayed numerous management skills that are worth sharing. Few of them are listed below-

Branding
He is neither the marketing guru nor is he well versed with the management modelsyet he has managed to nail the basics of all management theories starting from creating  brand awareness to defining brand purpose to gathering brand response and to building brand advocates.NaMo has taken down the nation with his branding and the connect it had established with the citizens. More than being a BJP win it was being termed as a victory of theNaMo brand. He had an optimistic outlook all through the campaign, though it was perceived as arrogance and over confidence but he didn’t care about what others had to say he moved ahead the way he wanted to. He had a vision and he made sure it turned into a reality.

Marketing Strategy
He understood the consumer insights, their needs, their demands, their grievances, their anger and then formulated his campaign which was the highlight of his marketing strategy. Modi hired the best minds on board to formulate his campaign. Ad gurus Sam Balsara, Prasoon Joshi and Piyush Pandey helmed the mind boggling Modi Campaign. Next in line were of course the slogans ‘Ab ki baar Modi Sarkar’ and ‘Acche Din Aane waale Hai’ that went on to become the chants of the nation. He brought together the perfect team who worked day in and day out to lay the foundation for his success. These coupled with the right mode of communications lead to his great win.

Timing
Modi began his campaign at a time when inflation was digging a hole in the common man’s pocket. The ad campaigns and the promotional activities like Chai Pe Charcha and 3D hologram speeches undertaken by Modi helped him connect to a huge segment of the audience. By the time of the elections, Modi had met about 230 million voters which accounted to about 30% of the total voter population. He repackaged himself in the perfect manner at the perfect time and then sold himself to the country which worked like a charm.

Leadership
While the others were struggling to come up with a name to represent their parties, Modi came out in the open and declared his candidature for the post of the PM of India. He never hesitated in speaking about his role and the measures he would take for the betterment of the nation. He interacted with the citizens of India assuring them a good leader for India. The way he stepped up and undertook the responsibility for his party should be a lesson for all the others who were just waiting to pick him apart. He learnt from the then ruling party’s mistakes and hit the audience with his new approach and fresh ideas when the iron was hot.

Social Media Management
Social Media is the biggest marketing tool these days. It is quick, interactive and has a vast reach, Modi identified the benefits and jumped into the ground with his strongest weapon. He interacted with the younger generations through these social media channels and cashed on the benefits in the forms of votes. Modi had planned out the election in a very systematic manner. He made it a point to reach out to each and every segment of the society especially the youth, the future of the nation.  Modi's social media campaigning was very strong which was revealed in the India Today Survey that stated that the internet had become saffron during the elections. Whether Twitter or Facebook, NaMo was trending on both the platforms. His communication strategy was the highlight of his victory in the General Elections 2014.
