INLEADers visited Vivanta By TAJ, Gurgaon on 22nd May, 2015

Entering a five star hotel with an empty stomach and exiting it with a fully stuffed stomach after a gastronomical delight is one thing but entering a five star hotel and exiting it with a stomach full of knowledge is something else entirely. Well, INLEADers recently had one such experience when Vivanta by Taj opened the door to its five star hotel and functioning secrets to them during an Industry Visit. Technology in Healthcare, the new member!

India’s healthcare professional and infrastructure shortage is one of the major reasons for its high mortality rate. According to statistics available from World Health, India ranks among the lowest in the number of hospital beds per 1,000 people. With just 0.9 beds per 1,000 people, the country is far below the global average of 2.9 beds.

In an effort to change this scenario and provide the healthcare industry with the best lot of Healthcare Administrators, INLEAD recently facilitated an Industry Visit to Columbia Asia Hospital, Gurgaon.  The visit to the 100 bedded multi-specialty hospital was a part of the institute’s continuous Corporate Training Initiative for its students.

The industry visit provided INLEADers with a great opportunity to closely observe the working of an International Hospital like Columbia. They also came face to face with various modern and international technologies being employed by different departments of the hospitals for various hospital processes.

Technology has now become an integral part of the modern day healthcare. A lot of healthcare of the present and the future have their foundation in Technology.

The visit began with the hospital’s HR Manager briefing the students about the hospital and then taking them for a facility tour. The hospital staff was more than welcoming towards the students and answered their each and every question with much enthusiasm.

Columbia Asia Hospitals Pvt. Ltd. is known in the industry for their clean, affordable, efficient and accessible Hospitals. It is one of the first healthcare companies to enter the Indian market through 100 % Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). The hospital established in 2008 has been successful in becoming one of the prominent names in healthcare in Gurgaon in no time.

Money Matters!

From addressing the basic question of ‘What is Revenue Management to its latest techniques like SPARR (Special Potential Average Room Rate), Mr. Joshi made sure that INLEADers didn’t miss out on any important information.  He burst out the popular myth that revenue management only deals with money management and educated the students that the concept basically deals with making sure that the right product reaches the right customer at the right time and at the right price.

Talking about the concept’s origin, Mr. Joshi enlightened the students that the concept was first introduced in the 1970’s by the airline industry.  It was invented by major US Carriers after the airline deregulation act forced them to compete with new low cost carriers.

Mr. Joshi kept the entire session quite lively and interesting by incorporating his own professional experiences throughout the session.  Listening to Mr. Joshi’s journey from an assistant catering head to a General Manager in a world renowned Hotel instilled the students with gumption and excitement for a bright future.

In the end, the session concluded with Mr. Joshi encouraging the students to stay focused on their long term goals and keep working hard towards achieving them.

Management and Healthcare- the new best friends

For most of us hospitals have always been synonymous with Doctors and nurses as these are the people with whom we mostly interact with while in a Hospital.  But, there is more to a hospital than just them. Every hospital has an army of people managing the daily working of the hospital in order to make sure that each and every patient is treated at the right time and by the right specialist doctor.  They are the ones who foresee that each department works smoothly and the hospital is able to meet its healthcare objective.

In order to make our healthcare administration students acquaint with the basic functioning of a Hospital and its services, INLEAD recently organized a visit to Max Super Specialty Hospital, a 504 bedded super-specialty hospital located in the heart of South Delhi, Saket. The hospital divided into East and West Wings, is one of the premier names in the healthcare industry.

Healthcare in India has grown at an unprecedented pace over the last ten years and has now become one of the largest sectors in India-- both in terms of employment and revenue. India with its well-trained pool of medical professionals is considered as a major player in the healthcare industry all around the world.

The budding Healthcare professionals of INLEAD had an awe inspiring and knowledgeable experience at the Industry visit. Meeting the hospital’s experienced management team gave them an extensive exposure of how to run and manage a large chain of hospital like Max. Accompanied by the Hospital’s HR representative, INLEADers were given a facility tour of the hospital and its various departments.

The visit gave the students great insights into the in-patient and support areas of a Hospital. It also gave them a broad overview of the industry that they are going to enter in the near future.
INLEAD believes in a perfect amalgamation of practical knowledge with theoretical knowledge and such Industry visits are a step towards just that.

What Corporates Want?

INLEAD campus has been abuzz with excitement and nervous energy with a fresh batch of future industry leaders joining the ranks. Their first expert session was undertaken by Mr. Jayant K. Sood, Head – Corporate & Company Secretary, Indorama Synthetics (India) Limited addressing the perennial question – What the employers are looking for in a candidate when appearing for interview. All students at INLEAD from diverse backgrounds and locations are bound by the common aspiration of professional success and they will be facing their first internship interviews in a few months’ time. The session titled “Corporate expectations and Industry Orientation” addressed the same issue and witnessed an enthusiastic participation by the students.

Mr. Sood began the session by asking the students’ one simple question, “What do you want to be in life?” The hands raised were many, while some said a successful ‘Businessman’, others said ‘CEO’ and some said a ‘Global HR’. This is when Mr. Sood pointed out the need to have a clear goal in life in order to become a successful professional.  Along with having a clear goal, there is also a need to have a passion and zeal to work towards that particular goal.

‘Self-Belief’ was the keyword most used during the session. Mr. Sood enlightened the students that a strong belief in oneself is the mantra to survive this concrete ‘corporate jungle’.  According to him, one should never under estimate oneself and always work towards acquiring the numero uno spot. He also encouraged the students to expand their horizons and look beyond the obvious as there is a huge world out there beyond our senses.

Addressing the basic question that was circling every student’s mind, Mr. Sood shared some useful insights from his own experience. According to him, the secret to excel in an interview is to be well-informed about the company and the job-profile you’re applying for. Further, a well-groomed personality with excellent communication skills will help an individual excel over his contemporaries.

All in all, the session was very successful and informative and gave the students a brief preview of what the corporate world holds for them in the future.

“It was a very informative and deliberative session. I have a much clearer vision about my goal now,” said Ankit Kumar Shaw, International Business Management, Batch : April’15 MBA  (1st Year).

“If I can turn back time,
I would love to be a student again,
I miss my friends a lot. I miss the fun.  I miss the life of being a student again…”

Reading these few lines must have given goose bumps to many of us. It’s only when we grow up we realize the real fun of being a student, of being a little immature, of being a little silly…

Well, who says Entering a College means an end to the fun part of life? Wrong, wrong…..

INLEAD very well understands that studying and fun go hand in hand because ‘All work and no Play would certainly make Jack a Dull boy’.

AT INLEAD, we organize sports fete each year, named INLYMPICS that not just celebrates fun, but also focus on incorporating the skills of team-building, strategic thinking and unleash sportsmanship amongst students.

The entire activity was categorized into rounds of three games like Blind Race, Arm Wrestling, Bull's eye, Hoopla, Dog and the bone, and Tug of war to name a few.

Students dressed in their best of track-suits and sneakers made the campus look all more lovely and vibrating. The adrenalin rush was quite visible while they shouted, screamed for their respective teams. A competitive activity though, students exhibited excellent teamwork and sportsmanship in INLYMPICS2015.

Not to miss are our activity organizers Anshika Srivastava, Mohd. Tanveer Alam, Rukmini Nair, Munmum Patowary, Gaurav Singhal, Mukul Bhardwaj and Abdul Majid who worked tirelessly along with the faculty to make the event a success. Another highlight of the event was a promotional counter set-up by the executives from Shopclick.com, an upcoming shopping portal to promote their business. The students got an opportunity to register themselves and leverage the benefits of online shopping through earned promotional vouchers.

And the winners, the Team Orange (Jyothi M, Vimal Raj John, Mudit Rana, Sriram Gaikwad, Navneet Kumar Yadav, Nikhil Mahajan, Dhananjay Kumar, Rajpal) and the Organizers were bestowed with prizes and certificates by Mr. Deepak Sharma, Dean, INLEAD. Top 8 Reasons Why You Could be Rejected in a Job Interview

We list few reasons why you could be rejected in a job interview.
  1. Your last tweet was in 2012: It’s better to use one network well and be engaged on it by sharing others content and posting your content, rather than have several accounts on several networks and not be active on any.
  2. Only number on your resume is your phone number: from your work to you as a person is measurable nowadays, your resume should include quantifiable metric to show your performance.
  3. Applying for Several Positions in one team: Being eager to join a company is a good sign but applying for all the openings in a particular organization is not a positive sign. Play it cool, but not too cool.
  4. Tailored Cover Letters & Resumes: Often cover letters and resumes get addressed to the wrong people, several times people applying for jobs forget to edit the subject line, this is something which clearly isn’t acceptable by the hiring managers.
  5. Unrealistic Salary Expectations: Avoid quoting unrealistic salary expectations. Do a research and find out the salary range that people of similar jobs like you get paid.
  6. Your resume is not keyword rich: A company usually receives high volumes of resume; hence every resume is scanned thoroughly. Read through the JD (Job Description) carefully & craft resume accordingly ensuring getting pass through in the scanning of the interview.
  7. You didn't follow up: After you have sent in your resume, you need to follow up with the HR Manager. According to a survey conducted 86% of executives said job seekers should contact a hiring manager within two weeks of sending a resume and cover letter. Often a brief phone call or e-mail reasserting your interest in the position and strong qualifications is important.
  8. Don’t believe in the concept of arriving ‘fashionably late’ for an interview: A study was conducted and it says a candidate has to be only 15 minutes late to be disqualified for the position for which he has appeared for in an interview. Avoid being late, respect time and reach well in advance.
     All the best!
